Keywords : Clearpath Technology
Search engines are dependent on keywords. Keywords are those word or words that are typed into search engines for which users want to find results. Keywords can be any word that relates to a page and accurately describes what the page is about. For example, if a site is about cars, the word “car” will appear frequently in the text. The site will also likely contain many related keywords like “tire,” “engine,” and “oil filter.”
When a search engine’s spider arrives at a site, they’ll notice all those keywords. Though search engine companies are notoriously secretive about the type of information they collect and how they relate keyword to each other, each search engine has a system for looking at a website and scanning for keywords. The search engine spider will search through all the text and find frequently-used words and phrases and assume those are the page’s keywords. The program will see these keywords in the text, in the page titles and descriptions, as well as in the code of the page.
The spider will then compile this information in a database. The words most often seen are considered to be the keywords. There are exceptions for articles and conjunctions words (for example a, and, the, but, not). These words can be used in a search, though, in as something called a Boolean operator. Most search engines support Boolean operators.
